Over the years of working as a musician, producer and teacher I've been fortunate to build up a wonderful collection of guitars and basses.
That said I am not a collector. I have no interest in vintage or rare guitars or in owning instruments I don't use regularly.
Every instrument I own fulfills a specific role.
This is my main 'go to' workhorse guitar. I've previously used both Fender strats and a Musicman Cutlass HSS, but this guitar replaced them.
I'm a big fan of Japanese crafted guitars and basses. These Ibanez guitars are premium quality instruments that cost around half the price of their American equivalents.
I bought this guitar new in 2024 after looking at guitars by Fender, PRS and Suhr.
This is my other 'go to' guitar. I really like American Standard guitars from this period. I added the brushed steel Fender locking tuners.
This guitar came second-hand from RichTone Music in Sheffield in mid 2023 and cost £ 899.00.
These American Standard instruments are excellent value, professional standard, non-vintage guitars.
This is my G guitar I use for 'Keef' style playing. This American Standard guitar came factory fitted with Fender Custom Shop pickups. I added the brushed steel Fender locking tuners.
This guitar was purchased new in 2015 from Dawsons and cost £ 999.00.
These American Standard instruments are excellent value, professional standard, non-vintage guitars.
I'm a Fender single coil player. I never really appreciated guitars with humbuckers. This Les Paul has P90s single coils.
This guitar was purchased new in 2011 from Andertons in Guildford and cost £ 569.00.
I don't play classical guitar very much these days, but I needed a classical guitar to teach Ranieri Book 1.
I got this Bulgarian hand-crafted guitar from River Music in Ross-on-Wye in 2023.
It's an ideal guitar for teaching. It sounds great and makes a pleasant change from playing electric guitars.
I'm primarily a guitar player, but I really love playing bass.
I've always liked Musicman basses. I previously had a 4 string Stingray with the 2 band EQ. I replaced it with a 5 string G&L bass. Finally sold that and got this instrument some time in 1997 or 1998 if I remember correctly.
This bass has that wonderful Musicman growl, it certainly doesn't sound like a Fender bass. I often record parts with it and only realise afterwards I haven't touched the controls. This is the sign of a great instrument in my opinion.
I love Fender guitars but never really bonded with Fender basses. I always prefered Musicman instruments.
Yamaha took a classic design and then totally over-engineered a more modern version. It's built like a tank.
This bass is ideal for old school blues playing and sounds great for recording.
'...my weekly jam sessions with Simon have really improved my blues playing in a most enjoyable way...
His gigging experience and teaching methods encourage me to 'play for the crowd'...'
